What Is Autism Spectrum Disorder?
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a condition people are born with, and it often runs in families. Learning about ASD is important for getting an accurate diagnosis as an adult, which can make a real difference in quality of life. Around 1% of people have ASD, so about 700,000 people in the UK live with it. If you have ASD, your traits have been present since early childhood.
ASD is genetic and often runs in families. Research has found many genes linked to autism, but the biology is still complex. Brain scans show that autistic people have different brain activity compared to neurotypical people.
Common traits of Autism include:
- Differences in social interaction and communication
- Intense focus on specific interests or routines
- Repetitive behaviours or movements (e.g., pacing, hand-flapping)
- Sensory sensitivities to noise, textures, or light
- Difficulty interpreting unwritten social rules
Autism is unique to each person. Some people hide their traits to fit in, while others show them more openly. Women and girls are often underdiagnosed because their signs can be less obvious.
Many autistic people also have other conditions like ADHD, anxiety, depression, or learning differences. This is why a careful and thorough assessment is so important.
Why Seek an Autism Diagnosis?
Getting a formal diagnosis can bring clarity, validation, and access to the right support at home, work, or school. It can help explain challenges you’ve faced and highlight your strengths.
At Diverse Minds Clinic, our Autism Spectrum Disorder services help individuals and families:
- Understand and embrace their neurodivergent identity
- Improve communication, daily living, and emotional regulation skills
- Avoid misdiagnosis and reduce stress, especially for adults and women
- Develop long-term, tailored strategies for well-being
Our Private Autism UK Assessments are quick, professional, and follow NICE-approved standards.
Our Autism Spectrum Assessment Service
We offer structured assessments for adults, using trusted tools and our clinical experience
1. Initial Consultation
We begin with a detailed clinical consultation to review your history, current concerns, and developmental background. For some individuals, input from relatives or close friends can provide additional insight.
2. Diagnostic Assessments
Our clinicians use a range of recognised diagnostic tools, including:
• RAADS-R (Ritvo Autism Asperger Diagnostic Scale – Revised)
• ADOS-2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule)
• ADI-R (Autism Diagnostic Interview – Revised)
• Social communication questionnaires and developmental checklists
We also look at other issues that may be present, like sensory processing, anxiety, or ADHD.
3. Multidisciplinary Discussion & Diagnostic Report
Following the assessment, our clinical team reviews the findings and finalises diagnostic impressions. You will receive a comprehensive report that includes:
• A diagnosis of ASD or other conditions, if relevant
• A description of strengths and challenges
• Tailored recommendations for therapy and support
• Practical strategies for improving everyday functioning
